What's the role?

We are looking for a Project Developer for utility scale battery storage systems located in the UK.  With a target of 2GW of operational sites by 2030, SMS have begun construction on four sites to date with a total 190MW combined, a further 460MW are either contracted or scheduled to conclude by the end of Summer 2022.

You will be reporting to the New Energy Director, and will be responsible for identifying new opportunities to develop battery storage projects to ensure we meet our long-term growth plans. Once opportunities are identified you will be responsible for managing the full development of the projects from feasibility through to securing the land agreements and obtaining the planning consents. Once shovel ready, you will work closely with the Delivery team to discharge planning conditions and ensure the project is built in accordance with all consents and licences.

The projects are predominately large-Scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) schemes connected at 33KV, 132KV or directly to National Grid apparatus although may well develop into other Renewable technologies.
The role of the Battery Energy Storage Development Manager is very fast paced. You will have the ability to review detailed contractual documents and an understanding of the market, policy and regulatory environment impacting the renewable energy and battery storage sector.

Key responsibilities:

•    Develop utility scale battery storage projects in the UK, covering the full development cycle from origination to ready to build status.
•    Produce feasibility reports for each specific project to obtain formal approval from senior management before proceeding;
•    Project manage the development of the pipeline, working closely with the delivery, technical and legal teams for support;
•    Negotiate property agreements with landowner(s) to give us appropriate rights to develop our projects;

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • A deep understanding of both the technical (grid connection, site design, planning consent) and commercial dimensions (land leases, equipment procurement, financial model) of each project, and the project management skills to keep all of these workstreams moving as per plan, while understanding their interdependencies and acting quickly to help remove any roadblocks.
  •  Sufficient and relevant experience in the energy sector, excellent interpersonal skills and good attention to detail due to the necessary elements of analytical thinking.
  • Full UK drivers license
