What's the role?
Software Engineers at SMS Plc work as part of a multi-disciplinary team extending and maintaining critical business systems.
Working closely with business analysts and product owners the software delivery teams play an important part in developing systems that fulfil new business opportunities and make existing system more efficient. The role involves writing software to a high standard of quality and maintainability using best practices and tools.
Software Engineers are involved in the full software development life cycle, by designing, building, testing, deploying, operating, and maintaining internal software applications at SMS.
A Senior Software Engineer will have a greater range of software development experience and understand the whole system under active development. They will take responsibility to teach others and mentor more junior colleagues. They will influence working practices and standards by continuously looking for opportunities to optimise the development process.
Work Schedule - Monday to Friday office hours. The role can be hybrid from any of our SMS office locations or remote within the UK/Ireland.
Key responsibilities:
- Work closely with Product Owners and Business Analysts to deliver application changes requested by business functions
- Consulting with Technical Architects to deliver technical impact assessment and code level software designs for proposed changes
- Collaborate in code reviews of other people’s work
- Mentoring and coaching less experienced Software Engineers
- Investigate and fix root cause of application defects
- Build and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable code
- Maintain code quality by writing automated unit and integration tests for all production code
- Carry out DevOps activities including defining infrastructure as code templates
To be considered for this role, we would love you to :
- Degree (or equivalent), preferably in computer science or related subject
- Professional software development experience using Java programming language - essential
- Strong understanding of object-oriented programming and SOLID principles - essential
- Familiarity with software design patterns - essential
- Experience with Unit testing methodologies and automated testing platforms - essential
- Excellent working knowledge of SQL - essential
- Version control (using Git desirable) - essential
- Knowledge of Agile development processes - essential
