What's the role?

Reporting to the Regional Technical Manager, the Technical Support Engineer role is to ensure that SMS achieves its meter installation commitments safely, by providing support and technical knowledge to the SMS Domestic Field Engineers.
The role will involve daily travel in the field to spend time auditing, coaching, mentoring and developing our Field Engineers. 
To ensure that you retain your working knowledge of the industry, this role includes a “field day” installing meters every month.
Working hours Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm and on a rota basis including out of hours and weekends to manage the Technical Helpdesk on a rota basis, including out of hours and weekends

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist the Regional Technical Manager to ensure all Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations and company targets are achieved, promoting a high level of Health Safety and Environmental Management throughout the business and actively participate in safety and technical forums as required by the business.
  • Responsible for delivering the “competency assessment” process, sign off engineers as competent to work , mentor field work force and coach where necessary to deliver continual improvement 
  • Carry out initial fault/issue discussions with field engineers and carry out tooling and equipment checks to ensure all field engineers are compliant and correct installations where required. 
  • Conduct audits in line with company procedures (incl Desktop, WIP and Invasive Post audits). 
  • Work in tandem with the operations team to deliver safe, compliant meter installations, operated and maintained in accordance with the company’s’ policies and procedures. 
  • Support information gathering for thorough, factual and impartial incident investigations and support the Regional Technical Manager to work in tandem with the Operations, Training and HR teams to ensure all training is maintained and kept up to date
  • Correspond with colleagues, engineers and customers via telephone and email in a professional manner. 
  • Identify training needs and coach engineers where required and identify Safe and Unsafe working practices. 
  • Technical Helpdesk – provide technical support and assist with technical based solutions/advice with the goal of safe completion of works and producing accurate data.

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

Required

  • Driving Licence (a current UK driving licence,or equivalent which enables driving in the UK)
  • Electric - MOCoP Three Phase
  • Electric – MOCoP CT LV

Desireable

  • Electric – MOCoP CT HV
  • Previous Experience in an audit/assessor role
