What's the role?

SMS are a fully integrated energy infrastructure company which owns, installs, and manages carbon reduction (CaRe) assets, including smart meters, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and EV charge points. Using our technology & data expertise, funding capability, and deep engineering skills, we provide total energy solutions for our customers.

With an operational portfolio of over 300MW and an ‘in construction’ pipeline of [200]MW SMS is a key participant in the UK energy market via an existing in-house trading function. As the portfolio grows and the energy market continues to adapt to the new, renewables-based system, the role of Energy Trading Risk & Compliance Manager (ETRCM) is essential in supporting SMS operations in delivering its activities to meet revenue targets and ensure compliance with all internal and external regulations and operational processes.

This role is contracted to 40 hours per week, and is home-based. There is the requirement to commute to one of our offices as and when required.

 

Key Responsibilities:

The ETRCM is a key member of the business and will report to the Trading Director, supporting day-to-day trading operations, longer term trading and portfolio development as well as any wider SMS product or innovation which may evolve over time.

Whilst expected to develop as the business progresses, the main duties and responsibilities will involve, but not be limited to, three key areas:

Risk Management – ensuring the delivery/enhancement of:

  • Operational Risk Management processes.
  • Internal trading controls & reporting.
  • Adequate operational monitoring systems and related processes.

Compliance – ensuring the delivery/enhancement of:

  • Appropriate governance, policies and processes.
  • Compliance with all relevant internal and external regulation.
  • Appropriate support for the setup of new projects.
  • Processes for ensuring personnel competency and efficient operations.

Operational Processes – ensuring management of:

  • Elexon processes: inc. credit & registrations.
  • Trading exchanges: inc. EPEX Spot & N2EX.
  • Trading parties: inc. OTC agreements and processes.
  • NESO interactions.
  • Regulatory reporting & change.
  • Performance analysis & reporting.
  • Industry analysis & reporting.

In addition, with an ever-growing portfolio and line of operations, the role will also support the delivery of new pipeline projects, new markets and other group activities.

 

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have/be:

  • Industry experience and excellent knowledge of energy trading, supply and associated industry processes.
  • Experience of risk management and governance approaches in energy trading and in delivering ‘real life’ solutions for this.
  • Knowledge of the following areas would be advantageous; Capacity Market, Elexon, National Grid/NESO, EPEX/N2EX, EFET/GTMA, Credit, REMIT, EMR, Settlements.
  • Experience of shift commercial operations.
  • Experience of leading and delivering projects.
  • Strong commercial understanding, especially in relation to maximising trading opportunities whilst managing risk.
  • Ability to develop high quality management information to support decision making.
  • Innovative thinker and ability to get into detail and take a hands-on approach to delivering the objectives and role.
  • Excellent staff management and development skills.
  • Experience of using technology to drive innovation would be advantageous.
  • Good IT skills, especially in relation to Microsoft applications and a knowledge of industry systems/available systems would be a benefit.
