What's the role?

The Graduate Energy Consultant will work within SMS’s New Energy Systems (NES) department, developing carbon reduction solutions for SMS’s clients. The role uses data analysis skills and an understanding of fundamental aspects of energy systems to identify, model, assess and advise on energy performance and opportunities to decarbonise.

The Graduate Consultant analyses energy data, surveys energy systems in customer sites, models current energy consumption, energy conservation measures and renewable energy generation, as well as compiling reports and presentations. The role provides an opportunity to apply and develop analytical, scientific, engineering and management skills for carbon reduction. 

The Graduate Consultant will be paired with an experienced energy consultant to learn and develop core skills and knowledge, with senior consultant oversight. The Graduate Consultant will work with colleagues in NES as well as customer stakeholders. The work will be 70-80% office-based with some visits being required to survey customer sites and join face-to-face meetings.

The Graduate Energy Consultant role provides an opportunity to take the first step towards being chartered as an engineer or energy manager while initiating and developing carbon reduction projects.

Work Schedule - Monday to Friday - 37.5 contractual hours per week. The role will start in September 2023.

 

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Represent the New Energy Systems department both internally to SMS and externally to customers, suppliers and contractors
  • Energy Data Analysis – identifying opportunities to improve the energy performance and understanding the profile of energy consumption of buildings and energy using plant, using standard Excel calculation tools and SMS’s cloud-based analytic platform.
  • Energy Modelling – using internal calculation tools for specific technologies (e.g. lighting) and energy profile analysis, as well as external tools to predict energy consumption and the impact of interventions to reduce consumption and manage demand.
  • Energy Audits –surveys of customer sites to learn to identify and characterise significant energy using equipment (e.g. lighting, air conditioning), investigate its pattern of operation and assess opportunities for carbon reduction.
  • Online Research – investigating technologies, energy management techniques, legislation and policy.
  • Reporting and Communication – taking part in meetings, the compilation of reports and presentations to communicate the findings of technical work and lead decision-making on carbon reduction.
  • Develop strong customer relationships across all customer spheres including: End Users, FM, Main Contractors, Consultants and M&E Contractors.
  • Agenda setting and minute taking
  • Upkeep of project trackers and project documentation
  • Promotion of best practice across the department and contracts

 

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

 

  • Degree or equivalent in an engineering or physical sciences discipline.
  • Data analysis skills.
  • Intermediate or better Excel skills, including word and PowerPoint or equivalent packages.
  • Experience of fundamental energy analysis, including efficiency calculations, energy balances, the conversion of work and heat, and heat transfer.
  • Understanding of commonly used energy and SI units, and ability to convert quantities between different units.
  • Understanding of fundamental aspects of electricity generation, transmission and use, including voltage, current, power, resistance, frequency,  transformers and power factor.
  • Experience of financial calculations.
  • Experience of self-directed research into unfamiliar topics.
  • Ability to collate, interpret, quality-check and communicate technical information, including cross-referencing, and the use of rules-of-thumb and benchmarks.
  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication to ensure technical and non-technical requirements are shared and understood by all relevant stakeholders.
  • Experience of independently managing projects and ensuring work is delivered as expected to a high standard within the allocated timeframe.
