What's the role?

The position of Senior Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Maintenance Manager presents an opportunity to develop the O&M function within our fast-growing SMS Grid Scale Energy Storage (GSES) department. Reporting to the Technology Director of GSES, the Senior Maintenance Manager is responsible for overseeing the Operations and Maintenance services provided by third party Operations and Maintenance (O&M) providers on SMS’ grid scale battery storage projects.

The role will work extensively with our key stakeholders within the Battery Energy Storage (BESS) team, including: Acquisitions, Development, Engineering, Construction, Contract & Commercial and wider stakeholders to ensure that any factors that impact the effective operation of our BESS assets are understood and actively managed.
 
The role will also be responsible for ensuring that our service providers perform fully and in line with our contractual arrangements and that we are working collaboratively with them to ensure we are utilising the full potential of their service offering. SMS plans to be the amongst the lead owners and operators of Grid Scale Energy Storage projects in Great Britain within the next four years, with a confirmed pipeline of 720 MW and a wider pipeline beyond that.
 

Work Schedule - Monday - Friday , Home based with visits to site as and when required. 37.5 contractual hours per week.  The position requires the ability to travel within the UK, therefore a full UK driver’s license is required for this role  . Car allowance will be provided as part of the role.

 

Key responsibilities:

  • Foster a culture of SHE excellence within both your own team and the wider business
  • Develop an Operation and Maintenance function to fulfil our asset management and O&M objectives as our asset base grows in line with our pipeline
  • Ensure we have a suitable supply chain to deliver O&M services for BESS assets and develop to ensure effective and efficient delivery of works
  • Ensure the costs associated with our planned operational strategy is incorporated into our budget forecasts.
  • Take responsibility for ensuring that operational and technical escalations are managed in line with regulatory, contractual & commercial obligations
  • Troubleshoot operational issues with our O&M service providers and supply partners to identify and resolve issues
  • Any other duties as required

 

To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:

  • Considerable experience in an Asset Management and/or Operational leadership role associated to energy networks and/or Renewables
  • Strong knowledge of asset strategies and operational delivery
  • Strong knowledge of energy management best practices, energy efficiency, and renewable technologies
  • Experience of Asset Operational Data Analysis and Reporting, preferably but not essentially within the utilities, process or oil and gas sector, other industries will be considered
  • Engineering and Technical knowledge and experience with awareness of operational contract constraints and understanding of business and technical risks
  • H&S qualification IOSH or NEBOSH & SMSTS 
  • EHS relevant experience, like RAMS, COSHH etc
